The most remarkable parts of the U.S. Constitution are the checks and balances. Which is why it is scary to notice over the last 20 years (with Presidents from both major parties) the office of the President has not only increased in power while the power of Congress has diminished, but so many people seem to be all for it.
For all issues with and jokes about Congress, the idea is that it is made up of hundreds of people representing voters from every state. Instead of one making decisions, it is hundreds of representatives working together and against each other, fighting it out and compromising in order to protect the all nation from the tyranny that would be if one group got to decide all for everyone.
The beauty of the US Constitution is balance.
The other balance, the Supreme Court, should, by definition, be impartial. Instead, we have open discussions, strategies, and prayers with the stated goals of loading the court for one side or the other. Having a Conservative or Liberal majority or the Supreme Court undermines the whole purpose of the Court. It's like fixing a ball game, only the "ball games" here affect, and sometimes cost lives.
Perhaps it is a bit naïve to expect every judge to be impartial, but there have been too many swing vote judges over the years to deny such persons do exist. Swing vote judges tend to be the most maligned, when, in truth, they show the true American spirit of independence. It is supposed to be justice for all, not just justice for one side.
The Court should support the Constitution, not the President or Congress. It should be a Check and Balance for both. As the President should be for Congress and the Court, and Congress should be for the Court and the President.
It is worth noting that the last great Check and Balance protecting the American People from Government corruption, the free press, has been rendered ineffective due to partisan use of the term “fake news” for any story that doesn’t fit the party line, or makes a party candidate or incumbent look bad (even if the story is true). Sadly, the pundits, activities and many politicians seem to have taken a page from the book of Goebbels and realized if the press can be manipulated or put into doubt, the party narrative can be controlled and disseminated.
